Newsletter of the Kitsap Aircraft Radio Control Society (KARCS), MARCH, 2006

From The Left Seat....

As I sit here writing this, the weather forecast is for possible snow late in the week. However, looking at the calendar, spring is officially just around the corner. So, if you are not one of the hardy souls who have been flying all winter as weather permitted (and sometimes didn't) then it's time to get your favorite model down from the attic, dust it off, check it out, charge it up and head for the field.

Some of us who still enjoy (?) a heavy coating of CA all over our fingers are finishing up new planes for the coming season. Others are outfitting their new ARF's. This means that there should be a pretty good showing of new "stuff" at the field with the return of "Old SOL".

In fact, why don't some of you builders/ assemblers send Monte some photos and comments on your new projects for him to put into the newsletter. These are always of interest and also some inspiration to the rest of the members. I'll do my part by reporting on recent construction of Miss Hanger One elsewhere in this newsletter.

The next meeting will be at the Sunnyslope Improvement Club on March 14th. After the meeting we'll be serving cookies and Ice Cream again. There also is the possibility of another nifty give away!! Of course you have to be there to be eligible to win. Some of the topics on the agenda will be a report of our recent meeting at Little Field with the County Parks Management team. There has been a change in the date and format of our All Electric Fly-In in July. THis will be interesting. We'll go over the Magnum. 28 purchase program. We'll be discussing some of the up coming events in greater detail, plus a lot, lot more.  There will be a drawing for a

JR radio system.. DON'T MISS OUT.

ARCS MEETING MINUTES

March 14, 2006

Meeting called to order by president-Al Franklin at 7:00 pm

New members/Guests: Harvey Smith-member, Ron Sleeger-Guest

Treasures report: Read and accepted

Minutes: Read and accepted:

Field Maintenance: March 25, 8 AM: Field Work Party

County/Field committee: Bob Brusa stated that Mark Mauren the new Parks Director visit the field to see what work we would like the county to assist us with. Appears we may get some tree cutting done this winter after the Master Plan has been worked on and fine tuned.

Safety: Rick Hein mentioned that it is an AMA rule that your aircraft must be marked with your AMA number. No AMA number, no Insurance!! Beepers are suggested for all aircraft, they are a great aid in locating those planes that seem to want to land in the woods!!!

Sam Hovey requested that for safety sake, aircraft should be taken off from mid field vice the downwind end of the runway. This may not be possible for some aircraft, so caution is advised when accomplishing the takeoff run. If your aircraft looks like it is going to get away form you, shut it sown and try again.

An unfortunate incident befell Electric Larry Dun. He had a LiPo fire at his house. Most of his equipment was lost. Fortunately, no one was hurt. Just another reminder of how much attention must be paid when charging batteries.

Juan Andrade mentioned sever different types of container that can be used for charging LiPo’s safely. i.e. Pyrex, ammo cases etc. More info can be had by contacting Juan or Larry

Al discussed the need to be careful when using CA as the fumes can bond with the moisture in the lungs and the result can be deadly.

Events: See Website for a list of upcoming events.

Old Business:

Armed Forces day Parade will be held on May 20, 2006 @ 10:00 am. Jim McEdward is the director of this project. Jim passed out a sign up sheet for those who would be willing to have planes on the float. If interested in putting a plane on the float, contact Jim.

Youth program was discussed and it was decided the club would work with the Parks Department to set up a program during the week as was done 2 years ago. Al Franklin will coordinate with the Parks Dept. Instructors who would be willing to help are asked to contact Dan Mason - (360) 876-9370) so we can set up a flight program. Al is looking for a volunteer to run this program, if interested contact Al Franklin.

The purchase of Magnum 28 engines at a discount is being considered. We need at least orders for 20 engines in order to make it worthwhile. If interested in purchasing an engine, contact Corky Belcher at 360-871-8151.

The raffle prizes available at each meeting are at no cost to the club. This is a self-sustaining program.

Monty Foust is still researching the cost of a permanent sign for the field. We have an A Frame sign that was provided by the county and is in the conex for use on the weekends.

New Business:

Bob Brusa discussed looking into a soft rubber matting to replace the current mesh on the runway. Sam Hovey mentioned an asphalt runway would run approximately $18 to 20 K to put down. As this is a project that must be considered in the future, it was decided to postpone discussion until the Parks and Recreation folks do more planning of our site.

All discussed the projects for the work party. They are as follows:

Fix gate

Upgrade the container

Brush hog the scotch broom

Patch runway

Fix safety barriers

Add new windsock

Instruction:

Verlyn Grange presented two articles on safety. He also stated the AMA will be supplying the club with various handouts for use at events, meetings, etc.

Dan Mason will look into reviving the flight instruction manual for all instructors and new pilots.

Questions and Concerns:

Bob Brusa questioned when the rock crusher would be moved from the site. No definite date is available at this time. Bob said he would check with McCormick Wood folks to see if a date could be narrowed down.

Special Presentation:

Ice cream and cookies was the special treat this meeting

Drawings:

Mike Carriero won and electric power system in the "Tag You’re It "drawing. Mike found the prize on the bottom of his chair.

Paul Slover was not present at the meeting and thus missed taking home $.25 monies

The JR radio did not make enough money in ticket sales and will be held over until the next meeting.

Show and Tell:

Bob Brusa had an electric powered Cessna Skylane ARF

Al Franklin had a scratch built (NOT FOR BEGINNERS) flying hydro

As Al stated his hydro was not part of the show and tell prize giveaway, Bob Brusa took home the honors of best show and tell for March.

There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:45 PM. Next Meeting, April 11, 2006. 7:00 PM at the Sunnyslope Improvement clubhouse.
